The Wiedemann effect in a waveguide
An electrical pulse produces a magnetic field around the ferromagnetic waveguide. Interaction with the position magnet field generates a small torsional strain pulse at the magnet location.
From travel time to a position value
The torsional pulse travels to the pickup. Electronics use the elapsed time and calibrated propagation behavior to determine magnet position. The housing protects the waveguide while the magnet tracks the moving component.
Why null and dead zones matter
The active measuring interval sits between an electronics-side null zone and a tip-side dead zone. Active stroke is not the complete insertion length. Use the selected model drawing and its dimension datums when designing the cylinder bore.
Applications and measurement limits
Hydraulic cylinders, injection molding axes and level floats use position feedback with different mounting designs. Non-contact sensing removes a wiper interface but does not imply infinite assembly life. Temperature, linearity, repeatability and update rate need independent checks.
A separate path for torque sensing
Magnetostrictive / magnetoelastic torque sensors measure stress-related magnetic changes in a shaft or sensing element. They do not simply reuse a linear waveguide time-of-flight measurement. MagStrictive reserves torque sensing as a future product development scope.
